Some musings on WoW and dial-up

WoW Orc - Image 1We’ve been wondering why Blizzard hasn’t brought World of Warcraft in Japan yet, but have you ever thought about other territories? Sure, there is WoW in most known countries but how about the little, beautiful ones? We’re pretty sure they want to get their hands on this game as well. After all, a number of MMO titles that were big hits in Asia are slowly finding their way here.

We brought up the topic because over at the game’s official forum, one poster mentioned that he transferred to a less populated area where he couldn’t get high speed internet connection. So he is wondering if it is possible to play WoW on dial-up internet. You might find this silly but realities differ for different places.

Anyway, it looks like his musings have enough merits as it got a blue response (that means a Blizzard employee). Tseric said that they’ve actually bumped out the minimum requirements for systems when The Burning Crusade came out. He added as well that, of course, it is possible to play on dial-up but don’t expect to get optimum results.

While it is technically feasible to play WoW on dial-up, there may be a number of issues that result from this that we can not reasonably support, due to variations that are out of our ability to change or adjust. The network or ISP that people use can add a number of factors to connecting to the service that we simply can’t account for or change in a meaningful way.

We really haven’t tried doing this as we don’t want to give ourselves a headache. But if ever you were put in the place of this poster, may be it is worth giving a shot. Anytime of the year, we’ll go with a slow WoW than no WoW at all.
