Sony: 2008 is PS3’s year; hardware, cost, and pricing levelling out
With the announcement of the 160GB PS3 SKU, it looks like the PS3 is starting to level out in terms of manufacturing costs, hardware competitiveness, and market price. Yeah, a further price cut might not be announced soon, but Sony Worldwide Studios’ Shuhei Yoshida is still pretty confident that the PS3 definitely owns 2008. Sony Wolrdwide Studios’ Shuhei Yoshida is confident of the PS3’s overall success in 2008, echoing Jack Tretton‘s statement back in March that “this is the year for PS3.”
Yoshida’s claim is based on how they’re finally levelling out PS3 production costs, competitiveness of its hardware, and its corresponding market price. Speaking to VG247, Yoshida’s exact statement was:
All the things are now coming together in terms of the right hardware, cost and pricing, and we are increasing our hard disc space as we are increasing the content weÂ’re offering through the network and the big titles weÂ’re working on, coming out this Christmas. All that is coming together this year.
Aww, too bad he didn’t give us actual numbers and figures of the current manufacturing costs of the PS3. To spare you the trouble of digging through the web, last I heard back in January of this year is that manufacturing costs have gone down from US$ 800 to US$ 400. But those are only rough figures and concern the 40GB model.
Moving on, Yoshida is also putting faith in the software they’ve got lined up for next year, mentioning Heavy Rain and MAG: Massive Action Game. Aside from this, the Sony Worldwide Studios boss says that there’s still more coming up, some of which haven’t been announced yet. (Maybe we get a clue about them during TGS 08?)
