Sony confirm PS3 price for the UK

PS3

In an interview with Eurogamer TV, Sony Computer Entertainment’s managing director for the UK, Ray Maguire, has confirmed that the PS3 will cost £425 when it launches on November 17th. This confirms what we previously thought the PS3 would cost, after UK games retailer Gamestation listed Sony’s next-generation console on their website for £424.99.

Although this would translate to around £75 more than residents of the US/Canada are paying, Maguire still said “I don’t think it’s an expensive machine; I think actually, it’s probably a cheap machine”. He also said “£425 is definitely not a mass market price, no. But you think about the price, think about the price of just a Blu-Ray player. It will be cheaper than a Blu-Ray player just by itself. So fundamentally we’re going to be great value just from that point of view without even looking at the games side.”

Sony still have yet to reveal whether the 20GB version of the PS3 whit UK shores, but £425 is a lot to ask for a console, even one with as many features as the PS3; especially since Microsoft has reportedly told UK retailers that the cost of an Xbox 360 plus HD-DVD peripheral will be less than the price of a PS3 come Christmas. That said, to quote Maguire yet again “Number one, it’s a games machine and we all know that. But also it’s a high definition video playback device through Blu-Ray, and a lot of people don’t really understand that part of the functionality either. There’s a big story to tell people and a lot of information to be taken on board.”
