Sony electronics division vibrant, PlayStation brand suffers losses - Image 1Sony Corporation announced today that its electronics division is doing fine with the operating margin for this year expected to be reached and topped by March 2008.

However, the games division housing the PlayStation brand is expected to suffer losses due to poor sales. One spokeswoman from Sony commented that they’ve already seen this coming but their estimated operating loss was at around 50 billion Yen (US$ 432 million).

The same representative confirmed that their losses with the PlayStation brand, especially with the PS3, is now approaching 100 billion Yen or roughly around US$ 876 million.

On the brighter side of things, the spokeswoman said that these loses will be cushioned by the strong sales of their electronics business especially with their LCD TVs. In fact, sales will likely reach 5 percent in the year to March 2008. Prior to this, Sony was only targetting an operating margin of four percent for this business year.
