Sony going attachment-crazy for new motion controller

sony-wand-patent-thumbKinda like how third-party peripheral companies went gaga over the Wii’s waggle wand, it seems Sony has patented an large number of possible attachments for their upcoming motion controller. From something that looks like dual maracas to a possible solution to the “wand in one hand, DualShock in another” conundrum we saw during TGS ’09, Sony’s “Expandable Control Device Via Hardware Attachment” covers them.

 

Kinda like how third-party peripheral companies went gaga over the Wii’s waggle wand, it seems Sony has patented an large number of possible attachments for their upcoming motion controller. From something that looks like dual maracas to a possible solution to the “wand in one hand, DualShock in another” conundrum we saw during TGS ’09, Sony’s “Expandable Control Device Via Hardware Attachment” covers them.

 

One patent is for a thumb reader that can be “used to validate the identity of the person holding the controller by analyzing the biometric data provided by the attachment.” Thumbprint scanner versus vitality sensor, anyone? Another one is for a swappable d-pad that lets players decide whether the motion controller has buttons, a d-pad, or even a dial.

 

All of the attachments shown in the images below are just patents, so there’s no telling which — if any — Sony will decide to officially release.
