Sony to counter the Revolution and Xbox360… with the PS2?

While a Sony spokesperson has already said that the information below is pure speculation, it is interesting nonetheless. Via the flash game site Razoric, they have apparently gained info on Sony’s novel attack on the potential Revolution user base. In an email they received from a employee at Macromedia:

“Got some PS2 info if you’re interested. Sony intend[s] to make it their ‘Revolution Killer.’ They’re working on tieing [sic] in Eyetoy and some kind of controller similar to the Revolution controller. With a 100M+ userbase, tens of thousands of mature and documented dev kits and the very low cost of producing Rev style games on the PS2 platform they’re expecting to mobilise [sic] another 50M units over the next 5 years precipitated by a $99 price point in 2007.”

With the Revolution’s tactics of being the cheapest alternative on the block, and with the PS3 getting seemingly more expensive everyday, this may be a good idea. While the information is nowhere near official or particularly reliable, the strategy is an aggressive way of using a pre-existing userbase and an already established software library to steer gamers away from the Rev. Also, Sony can add Revolution-esque functionality to the PS2 by utilizing the Eye-toy and making a copy cat controller.

Lastly, according to the anonymous emailer, Sony is in talks with Macromedia to develop a ‘Flash Lite’ platform that will allow gamers to download flash games to their PS3 and PSP (take that Xbox Live! Arcade). Should any of this info be true, it would seem that Sony is taking more of a ‘counter’ strategy to beating competitors, as opposed to a ‘innovation’ strategy.
