Sony VR glove controller “just a patent, not a product” (just like their “mind-control controller”)

Nope, I'm just a patent, not yet a product - Image 1Nope, as far as the official press release is concerned, Sony is just patenting that VR glove touch-sensitive force/touch-feedback controller “to protect our ideas,” a Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) rep told Next-Gen. And, like the cynics in the comments suggest, “a paperwork filing is no guarantee an idea will ultimately result in a consumer product.”

No guarantee, but it doesn’t preclude the idea either. Who knows? Perhaps in a couple of years, SCE engineers may revisit the idea. Maybe for the PS3, maybe for use elsewhere (hey, the patent said “game console which can be manufactured by any company”). Or maybe some dev (say… Hideo Kojima?) might want to update one of his/her/their old ideas (say… Snatcher?) to next-gen and hand control.

Hey, it’s just a suggestion; ask Kojima if you want to know what he thinks.Put the controller down, and I will make YOU vibrate! - Image 1 You think that’s weird, though?

You should see one of Sony’s other patents. Next-Gen reveals that in 2005, Sony patented another VR-like control solution. Except, instead of gloves, players will control games with their minds, “using a non-invasive method that fires pulses of ultrasound into users’ noggins.”

Madre de Dios! And you thought Psycho Mantis was freaky.
