Gas Powered GamesSupreme Commander is getting a sequel. The publisher is…. Sqeenix?!

Hold on, are they branching out from anime-esque, Japanese-centric games? Is it snowing in hell already?

Evidently, yes. Square Enix issued a statement declaring their intention to publish the RTS adding, “We see great opportunities in European and North American markets, both of which are expected to be maintaining sustainable growth over these coming years.”

There are no announcements yet as to which platforms will be getting the game or when its coming out.

If I were a financial analyst… and I’m not… but if I were, I’d note that  Enterbrain, one of the top Japanese marketing firms, found that Japan videogame sales did rather poorly over the last quarter, dipping down 21% over last year, when it saw a 27% growth. Console software was down 33%, with portable software down 13%.

Despite their primary market being Japanese, Square Enix is apparently attempting to move away from their traditional bread winner. Is this the proverbial miner’s canary for Japanese videogame industry? I don’t know, I’m not a financial analyst.

One thing I am though, is a gamer. The original Supreme Commander was an excellent game and largely responsible for the zoom function and base automation present in almost every RTS since. If Supreme Commander 2 will be anything like the original, it will certainly be worth buying.
