Still more drop in console sales in Japan

PS3 - Wii - Xbox 360 - Image 1Last week we brought you news of the weekly sales count of the game console hardware sales in Japan. This week, we’ll be covering the week after that, ending at January 21. And it doesn’t look any better than it did the week before.

Media Create Co. Ltd recorded only 114,541 consoles sold from 3,000 retail stores all over Japan. That’s a noticeable drop from 128,274 units sold (for the PS3, XBox 360 and the Wii) a week before that. And not only that, it’s actually beginning to look worse for the PS3.

The PS3 sold 81,639 units during its launch week and another high of 76,992 units right before New Year. But ever since New Year, the sales have been dropping steadily every week; by January 21, it hit 21,105 units sold. Although Media Create keeps stating that 1 million units were shipped to retail stores in Japan, it seems that supply overestimated the demand. There’s no surprise to the Xbox 360’s drop to 7,041 units but for the PS3, it’s a shocker.

Perhaps a good indication of the PS3’s weakening sales performance is a good share of PS2 sales, which amounted to 20,169 units in the same week, just slightly lower than the PS3 sales.

The Wii, though strongest in sales, dropped to 86,395 units sold. Together with the DS Lite‘s success of 127,647 units sold (despite being a handheld), Nintendo bags the weekly topnotcher.

The console sales figures are summarized as follows:

  • Wii – 86,395
  • PS3 – 21,105
  • 360 – 7,041

We await the results of the last week of January…stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted.
