Did you know that Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix almost did not make the cut? That’s true, according to lead designer David Sirlin. In an interview with Vidoegamer.com, he revealed that the devs and art overseers (Udon Entertainment) were “worried” Capcom might pull the plug because of the art in the early stage of its development.

If you were wondering why it took them sooo long to get the game out, that was because redrawn art that was based on Udon source material was rejected by Capcom, and they had to redo the whole thing with an entirely new set of artists.

No wonder it did feel like they were gonna scrap the project altogether. Said Sirlin,

Yeah that was a possibility. It felt the most possible during that first phase during the art that we had to throw away. It was unspoken but everyone just knew it that if that art wasn’t going to work out then maybe they were going to cancel the whole thing. And turns out they didn’t. I wonder if there was just so much pressure from the outside that kept them going, I mean from the world of gaming. Everyone knew about the project by then.

Well then it was certainly a good thing you guys kept pushing for a console release for this game. The hype inevitably saved the game, after all. Sirlin further recounted their close call with the chopping block,

We were worried and Udon was worried, too. Actually Udon had a lot of foresight I guess. They were the ones that said, “it’s going to take this long and cost this much”. They were pretty correct. If only someone had gone with them from the very beginning and followed their plan. Udon saw what was coming.

In the end, the artwork turned out fine. Now it’s the gameplay that needs a little more TLC. We’ll be sure to keep you posted if we hear of any patches to fix those blacked out fights and wrong IDs later on.
