The Hyborian Way – Spell Weaving in “Age Of Conan”

blood defilerMagic in the land of Hyboria is a reflection of that world – and not something to be taken lightly. Like the power of mundane technology, the power of the ancient gods, if not handled skillfully, can turn upon those who presume to wield it (insert diabolical laughter here)…

Essentially, the “Spellweaving” system in Age of Conan is similar to the melee system, calling upon a player’s skill – and teach them to “balance their lust for powerful affects with the dangers that calling upon such extraordinary magic incurs.”

In a Spellweaving, the player will need the ability to literally “weave” complex incantations into a final spell capable of destroying enemies and their allies. These can vary from a combination of two spells to the intricate blend of twenty different spells (think chemistry). Players begin by activating their Spellweave ability, which causes them to fall into a trance. At this point, the Spellcasting player cannot move; s/he can only add more components to the weave. The number and complexity of spells and incantations that can be added into the final mix are limited only by the player’s level.

The Spellweaving system promises some very cool effects, and allows the player to customize a Weapon Arcane that will best serve his/her needs. But again, be warned! It may have been fun mixing ammonia and chlorine in chemistry class, but such idle play in the Hyborian world will expose those who know not what they have to the darkest wrath of Krom!
