The PS3 controller batt-pack update no.2: take them out yourself

ps3 controllerIn the last post regarding the PS3 controller battery pack, Sony left PS3 fans with an upbeat statement. Something about providing a service to replace the Sixaxis in cases where the battery packs lose the juice earlier than expected. That statement was issued less than a month ago. Times change.

Now, the company is teaching you the art of changing the PS3 battery yourself. Which leads to the next question… why? Didn’t they just say they were replacing PS3 controllers, dead battery packs and all? Talk about things that make you go hmmm.

So it’s starting to look like Sony will instead replace only the batt-packs (and by “replace” does Sony mean “sell”?). But, Sony has yet to clarify its new policy. Meanwhile you might as well practice getting those dead batts out of your PS3 contoller:

  • Unscrew 5 screws on the back of the controller
  • Pull the casing up
  • Disconnect the connector to the battery

But don’t worry, Sony said them batt-packs will last for years. But they haven’t changed that too – have they?
