In a recent interview, Jack Tretton – CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America – talks about how the PlayStation Network is competing effectively against Xbox Live, how Home is like “nothing seen before” and perhaps a hint of a direct media download service for the PSP.

Last month, Robbie Back of Microsoft commented that Xbox Live doesn’t have any competition in online services and Tretton’s comment on the subject may be in direct contrast saying:

We compete very effectively right now. The thing that we care most about and what is relative to our online experience is that we currently have 3 million users and they have downloaded 60 million pieces of content.

When asked how PlayStation Home will be able to pull in users when there are so many other social networks out there, Tretton comments that Home is “like nothing seen before”:

There has never been a 3D based community for a console system with such a rich media interface, with streaming video, and with complex environments. Given that we have our own network, that every device we sell has a built in hard drive, we have an opportunity to do things with and for the consumer like nothing that has been done before.

As perhaps a hint of things to come for the PSP, Tretton answered a question of whether the PSP will be offering a direct music and video download service for the PSP. Tretton answered this saying:

Given we’re a division of Sony you can expect that we will deliver a video download service that offer music and video directly for download as well as other things. In terms of delivery and content of that service, those details will come as we get closer to launch.
