UK gamers petitioning for 20GB PS3 at launch

415 quid is a LOT of steak sauce, you know. - Image 1 A couple of days ago, we wrote an article which contains a statement from Sony Computer Entertainment UKÂ’s managing director, Ray Maguire, confirming that only the 60GB models will be sold during the PS3’s launch in the UK. Well, here comes the backlash generated by that announcement.

At the moment, gamers in the UK are actively campaigning for the cheaper 20GB model to be also made available. There are already campaigns that ask people to write letters to Sony about the matter, and petitions have also been making their rounds. Most of these messages basically boil down to the point that even though all of the features of a 60GB model are great, there are still those who wouldn’t mind the lack of wireless features and extra storage space.

This general air of frustration and disgruntlement among consumers can be attributed to the fact that not only is Europe the last to receive the PS3, but buyers will also have to bear with the console’s heavier-than-usual price tag. So, even though retailers admit that the decision to release only a single version at launch may be a good one, business-wise, many still believe that it’s only proper for Sony to give buyers an option. As Amazon.com’s manager, James Schall puts it, “I like the concept of allowing the consumer to choose his entry level into next-gen gaming”.

Whether Sony will listen to the voice of the masses or not remains to be seen in the weeks ahead.
