UK-based Jalipo testing pay-per-minute live sports broadcast on PS3

PlayStation Network - Image 1In what could be a step in the right direction towards PlayStation 3’s quest to become the ultimate multimedia platform, online TV provider Jalipo is currently testing the waters in providing affordable per-per-minute live television broadcasts of sports events through Sony‘s PS3. How affordable? A Jalipo representative said that a 12-round boxing match that ran for a 50-minute duration cost only GBP 5, or US$ 10.

The sports coverage events included in Jalipo’s PS3 line-up include the Euro 2008 qualifier match between Scotland and Italy, and the Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler superfight. The representative added that the price will also depend on the content and/or the promoter.

The online TV provider also said that there shouldn’t be any problems in delivering the content, since the PS3 uses a standard web browser. There’s no confirmation that the content will be in full 1080p high definition, however.

We do hope that this project takes off. If the sports pay-per-minute viewing service through the PS3 pushes through, people will certainly be direct witnesses to the reason why Sony’s next-gen console won T3’s Gadget of the Year award.
