Uncharted: Among Thieves to “max out” PS3’s SPUs

Drake - Image 1The science world had Einstein who used only about 40 to 60 percent of his brain, and yet still came up with the brilliant theory of relativity. In the PS3 world, we have Naughty Dog who used only 30 to 40 percent of the PS3’s power and still came out with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Now, imagine if they went the full hundred for Among Thieves. Full of wondrous possibilities, huh?

Well it seems like for the case of Naughty Dog, we won’t have to imagine that hard. Christophe Balestra, Naughty Dog co-president, revealed in an interview with EDGE that they will be taking the technological development of the game to its fullest possible extent for the sequel, Among Thieves.

Uncharted used 30 per cent of the PS3’s SPUs, and this time we’re maxing it out,” he said. “That means we can blend and switch animations a lot quicker, and we have more facial joints in-game for characters to react with believable expressions.”

And I personally can’t wait to see that. With Uncharted, working only with the 30 percent of the SPUs already gave a handsome graphics quality; what more if they max it out! So far, no game has “maxed” the PS3’s SPUs. The most was Killzone 2, using 60% of the SPUs.

We’ll be keeping a close watch on the development of this title, so just stay tuned here on QJ.
