Unreal Engine 3 gets new lighting tech
Epic Games‘ Unreal Engine 3 is getting a beast – that is, the illumination system called the Beast. Illuminate Labs, who developed the technology behind the Beast, will be joining Epic’s Integrated Partners Program and will be incorporating their lighting tech into the Unreal Engine 3, the engine that powers Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3. Epic Games has announced that Illuminate Labs will be joining its Integrated Partners Program. The partnership will be adding Illuminate Labs’ lighting tech called the Beast to Epic’s Unreal Engine 3.
Looks like we can look forward to a whole new line of even more realistic games after the New Year. Since all licensees of the Unreal Engine has access to the new tech, we can also look forward to better looking sequels.
The addition of the Beast will give the Unreal Engine 3 these new features:
- Global Illumination baking
- Skylights from HDR images
- Baked soft shadows with transparency
