Virtual Console Games List

Go Link!Play-Nintendo, a gaming website, has made a post about Wii’s Virtual Console, claiming they have gotten word from a “trustworthy source” about the twenty-six launch games for the download service. Although the list’s authenticity is questionable, the game choices are logical and are sure to draw in big sales if released at launch. Here is the list from the site with our short descriptions of some titles:

  • Duck Hunt: Back when the NES Zapper was cool, Duck Hunt was practically the only thing hip enough to play. The goal of the game was to shoot at ducks. The price of missing them was being ridiculed by the mangy mutt. The listing of this game on the VC list makes me curious as to if Nintendo will include support for the Wii’s light gun controller.
  • Kid Icarus: Being a platformer of mythological proportions, Kid Icarus quickly became an NES classic. Pit, the main character, even is worthy of the privilege of competing in Super Smash. Bros Brawl.
  • The Legend of Zelda: The NES game that started the legend. You play as Link, locating the eight pieces of the broken Triforce. The game has been remade and ported several times. It was included in The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition disc for the GameCube. We can’t wait to have it on my Wii!
  • Metroid: This NES platformer is centered around Samus Aran, one of the only female protagonists in video games at the time. The series was later converted into a FPS with the release of Metroid Prime.
  • Mortal Kombat: Fatality! This was one of the first games to introduce blood into gameplay. Parents everywhere shuddered, and Nintendo responded by changing the red pixels of blood to grey “sweat.” I hope they change it back for the VC release.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog: It’s ironic to see Nintendo’s old competitor release one of its flagship titles on the Virtual Console. Mario really got the last laugh! It makes me wonder if we’ll be seeing a port of Halo on a future Nintendo system (just kidding, people!). Don’t shoot me!

Although the list’s authenticity is questionable, the game choices are logical and are sure to draw in big sales if released at launch. Here is the list from the site with our short descriptions of some titles:

  • Bonk’s Adventure: Ahh, who could forget this TurboGrafx-16 classic? It was the game that introduced me to gaming. In it, you play as a deranged caveman butting heads with piranhas and dinosaurs. The side-scrolling format is reminiscent of Super Mario Bros., but incorporates SNES-esque graphics. We hope they implement a saving feature!
  • Castlevania: This NES game was the first of Konami’s vampire-ridden series. In this swift platformer, you play as Simon Belmont, defeating evil one whip at a time. I’d love to play this one on my big screen.
  • Excitebike: This great NES game let players experience the life of an 8-bit motocross racer’s adventures across a side-scrolling course. One of its best features was the ability to wipe-out. Ker-plop!
  • F-Zero: Captain Falcon quickly became the star of this SNES futuristic Mode 7 racer. In the days of two-dimensions, Nintendo blew players away with their quasi-3-D effects. Falcon punch!
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: This game was perfect. It is considered one of the greatest games of all time, flawlessly making the transfer between 2-D to 3-D, harnessing the power of the Nintendo 64. You assume the role of Link and follow his adventures throughout Hyrule. I have many fond memories of this game, and it will be the first I will download.
  • Mario Kart 64: Welcome to Mario Kart! Being a sequel to the SNES Mode 7 racer, this game introduced true 3-D and had some great multiplayer features. Sign me up for the races!

The remaining titles include New Adventure Island, Ninja Gaiden, OutRun, Pac-Man, Prince of Persia, Punch-Out!!, R-Type, Rayman 2, Star Fox, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World, and Tecmo Bowl. With a killer game line-up like this (assuming it is real), the Virtual Console is sure to start out strong and make Nintendo a tidy profit. I can’t wait to see more games added!
