We won’t worry about low PS3 games-to-console ratio

Genji - one of the PS3 launch titles

Good news. In a GamesIndustry.biz news item earlier today, Enterbrain said there’s been about 88,400 PS3 units sold (although the figure we keep seeing on the Internet is “close to 90,000”). Enterbrain, the publisher of Famitsu, said that the ratio of PS3 games to PS3 consoles sold is 0.98 – that’s less than one game per console sold. In other words, some of the people who bought those 88,400 consoles never bought a game.

Now why would you buy a console and not buy any games? Because you’re not really planning to hold on to that console. Yep, you’re planning on selling your PS3 on eBay.

Enough about Enterbrain, let’s do a QJ analysisfication, shall we?

  • You know that a bunch of people bought two games, so if the games-to-consoles ratio is close to 1, that means that for every person who bought 2 games, there were 2 people who were just buying for the gray market, and for every person who bought 3 games, there were 3 people buying for the gray market.
  • This means there’s a lot of PS3s in the gray market.

We don’t know if this is anything to worry about. As long as you people play it smart and don’t get robbed or buy a damaged PS3, then it’s just healthy capitalism. The seller makes money and can finally pay rent and college tuition, and the buyer gets a PS3 without having to wait in line. That kind of win-win synergy is what makes the world go round.

And when those PS3s get to where they belong (in the homes of Sony fanboys who will love them and polish their smooth black surfaces and take care of them forever and ever) BOOM! We’ll see game sales go up. Because the people that matter, the hot-blooded gamers, will be ready to buy games.
