Iwata: Nintendo's E3 2009 Software Aimed To Topple PS2 - Image 1Ohhh, it’s on. Speaking to investors, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata threw down the gauntlet saying that his goal is to see the Wii’s install base exceed the PlayStation 2’s.

Very ambitious, considering the PS2‘s worldwide install base is currently at 124 million units, while the Wii is at 45.5 million, according to VGChartz.

Then again, it’s not impossible. Numbers from the NPD group from last month showed that the Wii had better sales during its first 26 months than the PlayStation 2 did.

So how exactly do they plan to catch up to the PS2? A secret weapon, apparently. With software that they will unveil at this year’s E3:

Wii still has much more room for expansion. We can expect more sales of software in the next fiscal year than in the current year. With what kind of software is Nintendo going to achieve this goal? Well, it will be shown at E3 to be held in the U.S. this June.

Sounds like E3 is actually something to look forward to this year. And it looks like Nintendo will finally come out of its shell. They’ve been pretty quiet the last few months.
