200GB Blu-ray discs coming soon?
Japanese electronics company TDK announced plans to develop a 200GB Blu-ray disc, which would be four times the capacity of current Blu-ray discs. Back in May 2005, TDK already flexed their muscles with the showcase of a four-layer 100GB BD-R prototype, writable with 216 Mbps. Normal, 50GB-sized BD-Rs are only capable of half the speed.
200GB is definitively an impressive number and roughly comparable to the average HDD size in use today. Imagine backing up your whole hard drive on a single disc…but of course, there are a couple hurdles to be taken before that, as the medium itself, Blu-ray, needs to get affordable for Average Joe Consumer, a feat the Playstation 3’s advent will certainly help with.
Either way, there’s a lot of potential to be found within the technology. A development like this one is always welcome in light of many analysts predicting the decline of optical storage media.
