6 Million Wii by March ’07
According to German website Gamefront, Nintendo have predicted that they will sell an estimated 6 million Wii consoles and 17 million Wii games by March 2007. This prediction comes just as Nintendo announce sales figures for the ever-popular handheld DS console with sales breaching the 21 million mark, one DS console selling every second. Nintendo have been sneaky in announcing this, as we do not yet know when the Wii will be released, meaning we cannot compare this to how well Sony predicts their PS3 to do or Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 predictions.
This rather small announcement is dwarfed by DS sales reaching 21 million in 2 years, but if you think about it, 6 million in a period of time that can be estimated at a maximum of 8 months or so between the Wii launch and the March sales target is still quite a large prediction. If we take an educated guess at say 6 months, this would mean that Nintendo would sell almost as many Wii as it has DS’ in 2 years, even taking into account the depreciation of sales. However many Wii sales there are between its launch and March, you’d bet it’ll be more than the Gamecube. After all, with that controller and tiny size – who wouldn’t buy one?
