80GB PS3s for US$ 399 come 2008 says Pachter

PS3 - Image 1 Analyst Michael Pachter may have swung and missed with his prediction on the Microsoft Xbox 360 dropping prices in E3, but that hasn’t fazed him on issuing some more fearless forecasts regarding console prices.

The Wedbush Morgan analyst has been vocal about his thoughts on a Sony PlayStation 3 price cut this year and he was proven right with recent announcements made by the electronics giant. This time, he predicts that the new 80GB version of the PS3 which launches bundled with MotorStorm at US$ 599 will follow its 60GB siblings.

Pachter explains that there are still around two to three million 60GB models left in the shelves. A price cut should hasten the sale of the soon-to-be-discontinued model to make way for the 80GB version. Once the 80-giggers fully replace earlier versions, their price tags should fall to US$ 499 as well.

“Once these units are sold through, we expect the company to lower the price of its 80GB model to US$ 499 on a standalone basis,” he says.

Even bolder is his next prediction on the high-end console’s future. “We expect the USD 499 price cut to be maintained until early next year, when the 80GB model will likely be cut again to USD 399,” Pachter comments.

If he’s right, then 2008 should be a huge year for Sony with big games slated for release on the PS3. Having another price drop should sweeten the deal for gamers everywhere who are still thinking of getting their hands on a unit.
