Will Wii Have Start-Up Disc And Online Beta Test Upon Release?

Wii Start-Up Disc

At the moment, there’s a rumor going around that upon the release of the Nintendo Wii, the console will be coming with a system updater disc, which is no less than the Wii Start-Up Disc. There is no further details about the speculated firmware, but rumor has it that it is required for the first batch of Wiis that are expected to go on sale. A second rumor is that Nintendo will put up Wii online beta testing that will shake out any nasty bugs in the Wii’s Virtual Console, WiiConnect24 as well as its other online elements. It is also said that it is to be expected between September 18 and October 23.

As its rival, the Playstation 3, will not be available in PAL territories upon release, could this be Nintendo’s way of stealing the limelight from Sony? In an effort to pre-empt the PS3, will they ship their first batches of consoles in such a state that it needs a driver?

At the moment, one has to note that these are all rumors, but with the Tokyo Game Show rapidly approaching, perhaps we’ll have some concrete answers by then.
