SparkForge Inc. forged; prepare for “Massively Online Scalable Games”
MSOG-what? It’s what new MMO company SparkForge calls a “largely ignored” segment of the online multiplayer market, sandwiched between the hardcore MMORPG crowd and the casual online gamer (referring to Xbox Live?), the “leisure gamer.” They want the challenge and community found in the hardcore MMORPG offings – but they don’t want the equally massive investments in time and money that playing MMORPGs usually entail.
Enter MSOG, for “Massively Online Scalable Games.” They bridge the gap between the single-player market, which tends to be dominated by expensive hit-driven development, and the massively-multiplayer world, where thousands of players interact in universes under the exclusive control of publishers,” says SparkForge founder and CEO Jon Radoff. Why “scalable?” “Players will have the choice of using company-sponsored servers, or guilds will be able to setup and run their own customized gaming sites.”
No further details were offered beyond their press release, so we have no clear idea on how this is going to work out. Other than that, SparkForge is developing its own content platform for use, both on SparkForge’s own games and licensed to others in the online gaming industry.
Still no solid idea, or a clear picture of what kinds of games SparkForge will offer. On the other hand, CEO Radoff does have a bit of MMORPG experience under his belt. While he served as CEO of an early Internet service provider called NovaLink, he helped develop one of the first commercial MMORPGs in the market, Legends of Future’s Past.
