Play It boss on PSP Publishers
Mark Cale, the managing director of value publisher Play It has said that most labels that have built their reputation on home consoles don’t understand what is needed to keep the PSP audience happy.
He says that the reason that a lot of games have failed on the PSP is that the publishers are prioritizing lavish, full 3D productions ahead of gameplay. He says that handheld users are seeking a more addictive and distracting gaming experience.
Cale used CapcomÂ’s Ultimate GhostsÂ’N Goblins as an example of a game that’s a perfect fit for the PSP.
Just who are Play It and what gives them the right to make such bold statements? According to Mark Cale in a different interview over at GamesIndustry.biz, they are “a well recognized brand in the gaming sector.” He also adds that they are “the largest value publisher on PlayStation 2” in Europe and Sony’s 12th largest customer overall in volume on the console.
So I guess they’ve got a lot riding on the Sony’s well being. Their full-price sister label though, System 3, is set to publish a range of updated classic titles for DS this December.
