Konami classics headed for Live Arcade
All together now: UPUPDOWNDOWNLEFTRIGHTLEFTRIGHTBASTART! Okay, everybody knows the Konami Code. Heck, even my girlfriend – who plays nothing but DDR – is aware of it. That’s how far-reaching and famous Konami has become, thanks in large part to the game that has almost entirely defined the whole run-and-gun section of the shoot’em-up videogame genre, Contra.
It’s now 2006, almost a full two decades since Contra first burst onto our TV screens via the NES, and the magic is about to happen again. That’s right people, Contra is making a comeback, and the stage for this momentuous event will be the Xbox Live Arcade. Of course, such an occasion needs a lot of frills, so this second coming of sorts will feature new and enhanced graphics, leaderboards and online multiplayer.
And that’s not all. Konami is also bringing another of their ’80s arcade hits over to the Live Arcade. Gyruss, Konami’s pseudo-3D space shooter from 1983, will also touch down on the Live Arcade with a shiny new coat of paint. Aside from the graphical update, the Xbox Live release of Gyruss will also include the original game.
Over in the land of the rising sun, Konami has Yie Ar Kung-Fu scheduled for a Japan-exclusive Xbox Live release. There has been no announcements regarding what kinds of upgrades Yie Ar Kung-Fu will get, but we expect it to sport a spankin’ new paintjob as well.
All this nostalgia has made me a bit teary-eyed, so let’s just close this up with a look at the original arcade promo fliers for each of the above mentioned games. Keep checking QJ for more updates on these games, and don’t hesitate to leave a comment.
