Million-dollar console war question answered with: “Stalemate?”
When will the console wars end? Can’t wii we all just get along peacefully together and ride merrily along into the sunset? There’s always been a constant debate, but there never seems to be any treaty or a simple shaking of hands.
Dennis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights, gives us an interesting view on how the consoles match up against (or, in this case, with) each other. When asked about how the next-gen platforms about where they are going, he said that the PS3 and 360 were “equal in power”. He says that while the PS3 has the upper hand of processing power, the 360 has more available memory.
“It’s pretty much a net, net. The public perception of the PS3 was that it was much more powerful. To developers, they look even,” he adds. How about the Wii? Well, he says that the question is “if the controller stands the tests of time.” It does have potential, but will it live up to its hype?
Now speaking of developers, he has also mentioned that, staffing-wise, the number of programmers have doubled or tripled now, what with other people needed for cinematographers, musicians, story writers, and the like. Unsurprisingly, he even says that development is “starting to approach the cost of small budget movies. It will be there by the end of this generation.”
As for the 72-million dollar question of who wins the console wars, here’s his stand:
It’s a tough one. Microsoft is looking really good. Everyone is looking pretty good. At the beginning, everyone thought Sony would walk away with it. We won’t know for sure for two years.
Anyone want to take a shot at the jackpot question? Yes, Dyack has some valid points, truth be told, but what are yours? Maybe badam, who tipped us off (thanks!), has something to say about this as well? Will there even be a happily ever after? Or will everything just add up to one great stalemate of a race that has everyone on equal footing? Doesn’t that “Comment” link look inviting? Yes, you know what to do.
