Angry Nintendo Nerd rants about Wiimote ancestor Power Glove
Before Nintendo‘s Wiimote, there was what we could call the grandfather of the motion-sensing technology for video games. It was known as the Power Glove. The Power Glove, which went well with the fashion style of the 90s, is a controller accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System with a traditional D-pad on the forearm. It also had a program button and buttons labeled 0-9.
The Power Glove could detect roll, and it used sensors coated with conductive ink yielding a resolution of 4 positions (2 bits) per 4 fingers. This made it possible for the Power Glove to store all the finger flexure information in a single byte.
There were only two games with specific features for use with the Power Glove: Super Glove Ball and Bad Street Brawler. Collectively they were know as the “Power Glove Gaming Series.” Two more games, Glove Pilot and Manipulator Glove Adventure, were supposed to join the series but were never released.
In case you’re wondering whatever happened to the Power Glove, well, the Japanese company that made it went bankrupt. In case you’re wondering why, we’ll let the Angry Nintendo Nerd do the ranting. You can watch the video at their site: Angry Nintendo Nerd on Power Glove.
