PlayStation Pornable: more worries from concerned investigators
News4Jax has a very amusing article up. Although most of it makes sense, there’s just something a bit wrong about it. Here’s how it opens:
Investigators warn that a toy on the top of the wish lists of children all over the country this holiday season could be loaded with inappropriate material.
Yep, the wanted item that the article is referring to is the PSP. Honestly we really don’t see how much more dangerous the PSP is as a means for getting porn than any other material. You can get porn on cable, on your PC, and on any other handheld that can handle video content. Heck, all they have to do is go to some fan-fiction website and they can find porn there.
According to Jeff Durfee, the assistant director of Information Technology at the University of North Florida, here’s what investigators are concerned about: “They’re just getting on and downloading the content to PSP like a storage device and taking the video off.”
Uh-huh. I bet you, if the kid really wanted to surf porn, and he was away from the PC, he’ll borrow daddy’s WiFi/Web capable PDA and he’d do the same thing. As weird as the article starts, the good that it did is they were able to put Durfee’s “bottom-line” quote in it. He says:
Really, it’s like any other thing you would do as a parent. You need to be aware of what your kids are doing online. Of course there have been some slips but those cases are rare
The problem with this one is that given how some “protective” parents tend to overreact, people might jump on this thing and scream “All those internet-capable consoles and those WiFi whatchamacallit portable PS thingies are evil… blah blah blah blah… they let our kids surf porn! Blah blah blah.” If you know anyone who’ll say that, tell them that if consoles are evil because it lets kids view inappropriate material, so are pencils, because you know, kids can use pencils to draw badly rendered images of gonads on washroom walls. Yeah pencils are duh dehbyl.
Also if you have an “eager to protect” parent, be quick to tell them that most retailers screen used PSPs for pornographic content before resell. Of course there have been some slips, but those cases are rare and are mostly reported and re-told in the internet only because people love to point and laugh.
