Microsoft Sends out Extended Warranty Letter – Pay More to Get More
Yesterday I received a letter in the mail detailing an extended warranty plan for my brother’s Xbox 360, and immediately threw it aside. However, I recalled the previous discussion of extended warranties for Xbox’s manufactured before January 1st, and read up more on that.
Apparently, those that purchased these Xbox 360’s received a free extension to their warranty to 1 full year. My brother had purchased his Xbox 360 in the spring and it broke down a few months ago (Ring of Death – 3 red lights issue) and sent it back. This was, luckily, before Microsoft started charging for the shipping of the console, so I did not have to pay anything besides time.
Just now I received a letter detailing an extended warranty in which I could purchase up to a 3 year plan! I began wondering about why they sent me this, and recalled that I had sent in my brother’s Xbox 360 under my name!
I’m assuming that Microsoft’s distributing these letters to all of those who have sent their 360’s in for repair, hoping to get some extra “dough” out of the deal from the consumer who already had faulty hardware. However, the price of the extended warranty is nothing to smile at, with 3 years toping off at just under 100$, I think I would save my money and take my chances. I’ve uploaded high-quality scans of the entire letter and form for those interested in their “scheme” – just click each image to go to the high-res image.
