Mark Rein confirms support for Gears of War
Epic Games VP Mark Rein may have dumped the December 24 Re-emergence Day hoax, but we’ve got more confirmation about their future online support for Gears of War. It’s already been known that GoW will be putting up some downloadable content for all of us to enjoy (for free!), and that they’d be rolling out a supposed “housekeeping” update in the next couple of weeks.
Rein admits that the huge numbers of people playing GoW online came as a shock to them. “Our main focus on Gears was building the single player game. But while Gears might not be the most feature-rich multiplayer game around, people are still playing it online in absolutely huge and unexpected numbers.”
And so with this, they’re giving a big thanks to everyone by being vigilant with more online support. Rein continues with:
We’re already preparing an update, which is somewhat of a housekeeping task to adjust a few things rather than any significant new functionality, and we’re also working on finalising some downloadable content as well. These should be in peoples’ hands in the next few weeks – but they’re just the first of several things we have planned to keep the Gears fire burning.
No “significant new functionality” is fine on our books. The point here is that they’re up to the task of keeping GoW alive for years to come. That as much is the best promise any game developer can keep.
