PSP to hit 1M units sold in UK this year

PSPDespite UMD troubles and the massive wave of online fanboy disdain and hype surrounding its home console rivals, the PSP is well on its way to selling one million units in the UK this year. This was revealed by Sony in an interview with MCV.

The PSP, which debuted in U.K. last September, quickly became the fastest-selling console the territory had ever seen and this year the numbers are looking good for the Sony handheld. The PSP has managed to comfortably outsell both PS2 and Xbox 360 this year, making its retail performance second only to the DS.

“People mention us in the same breath as DS because weÂ’re both handheld products, but weÂ’re actually going after very different markets,” Sony UKÂ’s commercial director Kevin Jowett told MCV. “WeÂ’ve put in just under £ 300 million of turnover at retail with PSP because weÂ’re such a boys console and weÂ’ve hit the mark with older gamers.”

Sony also promises gamers that a lot more is in store for the PSP next year. According to Jowett, “The evolution youÂ’ll see on PSP will be greater than any console Sony has ever released, starting with new peripherals like the PSP camera, which is out in early 2007.”
