Killer moves in Lost Planet: the key to survival
The only thing more ice-cold than the terrain of Capcom‘s Lost Planet: Extreme Condition are the killers you might meet in single and multiplayer gameplay. Especially when going up against some insectoid fauna, and some bruisers in Vital Suits, it is vital to have a suite of moves on tab at all times. A sharp mind and a fleeting grip on the controller may be all the difference between victory and ending up as a slab of meat on the snow-covered ground. Here’s IGN’s lowdown on some useful moves you can pull off in a frozen E.D.N. III:
Anchors aweigh: using the grappling anchor to grab onto hard-to-reach places is one of the most basic moves you’ll learn in the game. (Press X at any time to “break” anchor – useful if you don’t want to go all the way up or are using the anchor to quickly pull you up a slope). It doesn’t stop there, though.
- Rappelling from great heights, or simply hanging off the ledge with the anchor, is a great way to deal death from above. Just remember that if you take a bullet in this position, you will quickly eat the snow down below…
- And what IGN calls the Anchor Shot, but which we prefer to tag as the “Scorpion Shot” after the Mortal Kombat character. Launch your anchor at an enemy Akrid or Vital Suit, shout “Get over here!” (obligatory MK plug), and hold right trigger to make the said target eat lead. Alternatively, hold left trigger to prep a grenade for your best impression of the Starship Troopers movie.

Always kick a guy by the sweet spot: IGN notes the following precision-attack skills vital to taking down the enemy with one shot (or with the minimal amount of time and ammo expenditure):
- Headshots – ’nuff said. Up on the D-pad enters into the scope.
- Don’t kick an Akrid down by its head – instead, anything that glows orange has Thermal Energy. Hit it!
- Vital Suits – their joints are usually their sweet spots, but there is one more important consideration to remember. Not all VS are completely armored – there are a few spots where the human rider can be hit by a very well-placed shot (see Headshots above, but it’s not necessarily the head). A really well-placed shot will eject the occupant from the suit, leaving it intact for you to claim.
Prematurely detonating grenades: IGN notes this as useful when your grenade toss goes wide and you want to detonate it while it still might be able to hit something. Definitely useful to save a botched grenade, but we wonder how much fun it would be for your allies to toss all their grenades in one area, then you shoot at one of them as they converge…
Finally, Avalanches are no match for grenades. Instead of digging out VS parts, rides, weapons, and what not from the snow, drop a grenade and take cover instead. Instant defrost. WARNING: using grenades is not considered a safe method for extricating victims buried in an avalanche in real life. Break out the shovels and hope for the best instead.
