Costikyan’s indie revolution begins
If Greg Costikyan will have his way, the whole gaming industry needs to be revamped and shaken to its very foundation. Also known as Designer X, it has been two years since the American game designer and science fiction writer turned his back to mainstream game developing and established indie company Manifesto Games.
Now an adamant outsider, the 47-year old industry veteran has always maintained that he is sick of sequels, clones and movie tie-ins. To be quite frank, the industry is indeed currently being swarmed by such. Anyway, Costikyan’s stand and views didn’t actually happen overnight.
Back in 1999, he was involved in writing the Scratchware Manifesto wherein he calls for innovative titles made by teams of no more than three people and sold for less than US$ 25. These titles, as reflected by their company’s portfolio, are in low resolution, niche-based and sometimes downright eccentric.
Right now, Manifesto Games’ creations can be purchased online as well as other titles from those who have joined the Costikyan wagon. He maintained that if they succeed, they will probably begin thinking about indie games for consoles.
