RUMOR: Booting the Xbox 360 with a downgraded kernel

Unconfirmed, but nice.

It’s unconfirmed and still being tested, but it might be of note to the more tech-savvy members of the Microsoft community here. A post on the Xbox Hacker forums mentions the possibility of starting up your Xbox with a downgraded kernel.

Robinsod managed to boot his Xbox 360 using the 1888 kernel, which is supposed to be the full original kernel that was on the console. Whenever a patch gets introduced, the system boots the original kernel, and then picks the patch it should load to get to the latest build.

Robinsod tinkered with the version numbers, deleting some of them to try and start his unit on the 1888 kernel, but there’s currently no way to verify if it actually did anything as there’s no visual confirmation of a change. Discussion is ongoing amongst the members of the forums, and we’re hoping more information will pop up soon. There doesn’t seem to be any actual use for it at the moment, but if this downgrading of sorts is confirmed, then someone’s going implement a hack for it eventually. For now, feel free to read up on what’s happening at the source link.
