Confirmed: Super Paper Mario for Wii
On September 6, 2006, “Super Paper Mario Moved to Wii” was announced on the QJ front page. On November 26, 2006, the “2007 game lineup for Wii” article included Super Paper Mario. But doubts persisted.
Some said the game was only for the GameCube (Nintendo of America listed it as a GameCube title). Some insisted that it’s really going to be released on the Wii (Nintendo of Japan listed it as a Wii title).
Andre over at GoNintendo was nice enough to share the good news in Nintendo Power: Super Paper Mario is confirmed for the Wii. April 7, 2007, is the day to watch. Here are some details:
- Set in the town of Flipside. Above it is a giant black hole and math equations.
- The “Paper” aspect happens when Mario changes perspective. The game goes from side-scrolling 2D to a 3D view of the 2D world. You have to do this to solve certain puzzles (e.g., find new paths). [If you don’t understand what this means, look at the picture to the right. The top image is the 2D world. The bottom image is the 3D world.]
- Use the Wii remote sideways. The Wiimote’s 2 button is for jumping, and the A button is for switching from 2D to 3D views.
- Mario meets characters called Pixis that give Mario special abilities.
- You get extra points when you shake the Wiimote when you jump on an enemy.
- Better graphics compared to the E3 videos.
A few more things we’d like to add… You also get to play as Peach and Bowser. It’s just a one-player game, but it promises a lot of fun – we’re very much intrigued by the traps and puzzles that you have to solve across eight worlds by switching from 2D to 3D and back.
