Who really makes the games you play?
Ever wondered about what goes on behind the scenes while a videogame is in development? Yeah, yeah, we’ve all seen “behind the scenes” looks at one game or another, but a recent Sam Kennedy article on 1UP reveals one of the things that never makes it into any of these peeks at a videogame’s development: Tose.
We know, a lot of you are thinking, “What in the name of all creation is Tose?” That was our first reaction too. According to Kennedy (Sam, not the president), the Kyoto-based Tose “has secretly been behind a lot of the games you’ve played.”
The secretive developer – which is also the biggest non-publisher game developer in the world with around 1,000 employees – lists almost all of gaming’s big names as its clients: Nintendo, Capcom, Sony, Square Enix, even major American publishers like Electronic Arts and THQ.
Okay, if they’ve worked for all of these big names and on a lot of big games (says Kennedy, “Almost every Dragon Ball Z game before Budokai was developed by Tose.”), how come we’ve never heard of them? Simple. Tose has absolutely no desire to make its name known to anyone but the heads of companies who contract it. Kind of like modern-day videogame-making ninjas.
