Microsoft: 360 replacement won’t stop 360 sales

Shane Kim once again reassured gamers that Microsoft has no plans to kill off the Xbox 360 the same way they did the original Xbox. In fact, the company hopes that the console will have the staying power of the Sony PS2. Microsoft had already dropped all Xbox software support even before the Xbox 360 launched at the end of 2005. Third-party developers quickly followed suit.

“I don’t think you’re going to see the same abrupt move to the next-generation,” Kim says. “We’ll have a much more balanced approach when the next-generation arrives.” In other words, when the replacement for the Xbox 360 finally sees daylight, Xbox 360 owners are in no danger of a sudden title drought.

Kim admits, however, that they never planned to win the last generation console wars, and were instead more focused on the next generation of videogame consoles. “We knew we weren’t going to win the last generation, so it’s not about ‘How do we milk as much money as we can out of the last generation’, it’s about how do we define the future,” said Kim. “That’s what winning the next-generation is all about.”
