GDC 2007: Virtools to create new next-gen development engines
Stepping up to competition from The Game Creators, CryTech and Epic Games, Virtools (under Dassault Systèmes’ umbrella) will create two next-generation engine lines for game development: one for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and one for the Wii, PSP and PC.
Only known as Codename NP, this flavor of Virtools’ next-generation engine and development suite will cater to the prototyping and production of high-definition games for the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. The finished product is expected to ship by 2008.
Virtools v4, the company’s current flagship product, will continue to serve developers on the PSP, Wii and PC platforms while going up against The Game Creators’ newest FPS Creator 10, Epic Games’ popular Unreal 3 engine, and CryTech’s powerful CryEngine 2. The customizability and flexibility of Virtools v4 was showcased at Booth 454 of the 2007 Game Developers Conference.
With v4’s Wii-dedicated features demonstrated at the middlewares’ exhibition at the GDC, its a hope that Virtools’ next-generation solutions will create a better chance for games to be ported across multiple platforms. Chief Technology Officer Bertrand Duplat, for Virtools, Dassault Systèmes stated:
With our next generation solutions, soon to be released for the Xbox 360, we are now addressing top class development studios interested in high performance engine coupled with a new flexible production pipeline. With over thousands of characters fully animated on-screen and impressive shader-based visual effects, we are now playing in the upper league for production too.
