Cliffy B’s “hard on” for original IP
Whether you love him or hate him, Clifford Michael Bleszinski or CliffyB, the lead designer for Epic Games, knows how to make an impression. He stated that “I have a 40ft hard-on for original IP and that’s what Gears of War is.” Now aside from the fact that having a “40-foot hard-on” is questionable, we cannot help but accept the truth that original IPs are gaining ground.
Gears of War has really taken the industry by storm, even going to far as to gain 16 nominations in the The National Academy of Video Game Testers and Reviewers (NAViGaTR) awards, tying with FFXII for first place. Mr. Bleszinski’s observation that “The fact that Gears of War was such a success proves to me that this business is driven by its own internal IPs and not licensed properties” could not hold truer given that Gears of War sold has already sold more than 3 million copies.
For now, CliffyB has a lot on his hands with Epic Games finishing up the next Unreal Tournament and some other games. When asked about what new IPs he had in store for us, he just said that it would be a few years before he comes out with something as he’s really busy at the moment. However, he did add that he had “8 million intellectual properties” floating around in his head, hopefully, at least one of those ideas will be a winner.
