StrmnNrmn and his Daedalus R11 plans: Release is “in a couple of weeks”
After releasing the latest Nintendo 64 emulator for the PSP, Daedalus R10, StrmnNrmn is now busy making plans for Daedalus R11. Yes, you read that right, R11. In his blog, he shared what he hopes to fix for R11. So as everything would be clear, here’s what he plans on fixing for the next outing of Daedalus.
Fix the Expansion Pak support “for once and for all”. The PSP coder mentions that the memory is currently very tight so he is going to look at removing a few hundred KB here and there. He also said that “almost all the memory Daedalus uses is allocated up front – there are very few dynamic allocations at runtime, with the biggest culprit being the texture cache.” So with that, he plans on introducing a pooled allocator for the texture cache. The result of that is in case you run out of memory, you’ll just get white textures and not get a hard crash.
Oh, and he’s just getting started with the R11 plans. Aside from that, he also wants to “improve the way that global settings and per-rom settings are handled“. He explained that when your restart your PSP, Daedalus discards any setting changes that you make, so changing your settings over and over again, every time you run a game, could be a bit tedious. With this improvement in R11, the emulator would be nicer and easier to use.
And here’s more – StrmnNrmn mentioned that he want to work on some scripts to handle packaging new releases for distribution. When this becomes more automated, the more frequently he’ll release builds. As to when R11 would be released, read this:
I’d like to get all these changes done and release R11 within a couple of weeks. I have a couple of busy weekends coming up, so I’m not going to specify an exact date. You can expect it before May though (I’ll try not to be a couple of days late this time 🙂
In parting, StrmnNrmn divulges that R11 is more of a compatibility release and his work on the Expansion Pak support will hopefully lead to a few more roms running – he confirms that Majora’s Mask is already working. In the future, Daedalus R12 will again concentrate on speed. The best of luck to StrmnNrmn in his newest project! We’ll surely update you with more info about Daedalus R11.
We thank blackrave for the heads-up!
