Dell buries Axim with no plans for resurrection
Dell announced Monday that it would stop the sale of its Axim line of handheld devices and said there are no plans of launching similar gear in the future.
Through spokeswoman Anne Camden, Dell said, “The Axim X51 family is no longer being offered, and we have no plans for a follow-on product at this time.” Camden, however, said that their online store will still sell other handheld gadgets such as GPS locators and smartphones. No explanation was made regarding the cause of the move.
A probable reason why the Axim was dropped is the emergence of smartphones that combine the features of computers in one device. Personal organizers would have been hard-pressed to compete in terms of functionality, thus limiting production and eventually stopping because of the lack of demand.
The Axim debuted in 2002 and its last incarnation was the X51, which was released in late 2005.
