Konami’s Denis Lee on Wii’s Virtual Console
Speaking to IGN, Konami group manager Dennis Lee revealed that while there are a lot of other Castlevania titles out there, they decided to stick with Super Castlevania IV as the first title to be released for the Wii’s Virtual Console because the title constantly topped their polls.
For those eager to see something like Dracula X on Virtual Console, don’t worry, Lee adds that Konami wants to keep the fans happy and will continue to release Castlevania titles for the Virtual Console.
As for other Virtual Console related topics, Lee notes that Konami is extremely pleased with the sales and the popularity of the Virtual Console service. They see a lot of potential in it.
While Konami continues to release versions of games it is known for, it will still try to release other, less known classics. He adds that they’ll take into consideration which classics are famous in which territory, and they’ll try not to release “too much, too soon.”
As for how Konami sees Virtual Console versus XBLA strategically, Lee notes that adding enhanced content to XBLA allows them to attract more downloads and whereas in Virtual Console their goal is to keep production costs down by using as much of the old game as possible.
Lee also says that 8-bit sequels to retro games (like a Contra “remix” or something) on the Virtual Console is a possibility and is something that Konami is contemplating. However, Lee does say that their focus at the moment is to bring their library of classics to the VC.
