Tretton: We could have easily produced PlayStation 2.5 but…
We guess you’ve already heard that Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) opened recently its official PlayStation Blog. If you think that this blog will be spammed by a bunch of nameless representatives and spokespersons, well, think again.
The latest post right there was from CEO and President Jack Tretton himself. His blog entry started with a quick look back at the history of the PlayStation consoles. He mentioned that Sony “fully realized that past success is no guarantee of future success” but that it does give them a lot of perspective.
According to the president, at the end of the day it’s all about pushing the boundaries of the games. Quite interestingly, he added,
We could have easily produced PlayStation 2.5 at a slightly increased price over the older model, and driven some nice profits and marginal innovation for a few years but thatÂ’s not how we got where we are today. You have to gamble and make major investments in the present that will pay dividends in the future.
After that, Tretton discussed this year’s up and coming event E3. He said that this year alone, around 15 games internally developed will be coming out for the PS3 and the PlayStation portable will have around 18 new titles. The PlayStation 2 isn’t at all forgotten as some games are being planned as well.
SCEA’s Tretton then promised that they have something up their sleeves this coming E3, a few surprises no one has ever seen. He wouldn’t say what however because he explained that even though it’s just a blog, everything posted on that page is considered on the record.
