Interview: User-generated content important to Sony

Gametrailers' Bonus Round - Image 1

In a revealing interview with Gametrailers.com about the potential of the PlayStation Network, Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations managed to say something that really captured our fancy. For folks wondering about the future of homebrew on the PlayStation 3, it will probably be especially heartening to hear.

When asked about the possibility of mods and user-generated content being allowed for upload on the system, Lempel had this to say,

You know, absolutely, and talking about original content and different types of experiences in user-generated content, user-generated content is something very important to us, it’s very important to the industry. It kind of paves the way for new creativity and kind of keeps everybody on their toes to see what people want and what they can do. We’re definitely open to user-generated content…

Citing LittleBigPlanet as an example of their user-generated content initiative, he then explained how players would have the ability to make new levels and share them with other users around the world.

While it doesn’t have the same scope as making mods for actual games, much less homebrew, the openness with which Lempel explains the user-generated content initiative certainly sounds like hope for the future of homebrew and other sorts of user-made programs and games.

In any case, you can also watch the video interview at the source link below. There’s also some information about the possibility of seeing achievements and an in-game XMB in the future of the PS3, so it’s a pretty in-depth talk.
