Rumor Control: Sonic not really confirmed to be in Brawl just yet

Rumors, and more rumors. - Image 1

With Super Smash Brothers Brawl just a few more months away from its worldwide release, and the Smash Brothers Dojo page getting flooded with updates that just seem to get better and better every day – it’s no surprise that with all the anticipation, some of the more creative of us Brawl fans got up into hijinks that set the entire community abuzz with excitement.

Here are the specifics: a scan of a magazine article popped up around the Internet not too long ago, with the article about an interview with none other than Masahiro Sakurai himself. In the scanned part, we see Sakurai allegedly confirming Sonic‘s presence in Brawl, and that he was only waiting for Sega‘s green light for him to announce the blue hedgehog’s inclusion in the game’s roster.

As you can see in the image above, the scan is quite convincing, and for a while the Brawl community was aflame with this news. So is it true? As much as we want Sonic to be in Brawl, the answer is a resounding no. Posters from the Nintendo forums have cited numerous typographical errors in the article, as well as the images themselves looking quite shopped.

Another damning fact: the magazine that the article allegedly was scanned from, Ventendo, does not exist. Not to mention that the progenitor of the rumor – that is to say, the creator of the image – has already confessed to the forgery, much to the disappointment of fellow Brawl fans.

Massive letdown aside, it’s surprising that such a rumor was easily believed. After all, with Sonic and his friends already being featured in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, it’s not that hard to make the connection. And if Solid Snake himself could make it into Super Smash Brothers Brawl, there’s really no reason why the blue hedgehog can’t, is there?
