Exploring Middle-earth: The Silver Deep in The Lord of the Rings Online
While the Lord of the Rings universe certainly brought to light fantastic locales, towns, cities and mysterious dwellings, there are also those unmentioned-yet-legendary places that Tolkien unfortunately didn’t get to detail out or expound as much as we’d liked him to have.
Fortunately, through the work of Codemasters‘ The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar design team, we not only get to see these places recreated in glorious 3D, but we also get to walk around in them, too. This update is exactly about one of these places, namely the Silver Deep, the mighty dwarven hall that was built upon where the Elf-refuge of Edhelion once stood, but never did saw completion.
So why was this mysterious hall abandoned and kept under lock, key and guard? While Thorin’s intentions were honorable in wishing to have a hall recreated in the spirit of those great dwarf-kingdoms of the past, he was forced to halt construction by Gandalf The Grey – the wizard warning him of the old relics of Edhelion and the danger they pose not only to the workers, but to those that would soon inhabit the hall. Thus, the Silver Deep was closed, and even with Thorin’s death, it was kept closed.
Players looking to get a gander at the Silver Keep will be glad to know that they will be traipsing the mine’s depths at the starting instance for dwarf-characters, and later in the newbie experience of both dwarves and elves. Tread carefully, though, as the Silver Deep has a secret that could bring about the ruination of Eriador.
