Sega reveals details on Yakuza 3

Sega - Image 1Sony PlayStation 3 fans are set to get another action-packed treat from Japanese publisher Sega with the announcement of Yakuza 3 and the revelation of basic plot details regarding the game. IGN reported some things we can ponder on while we await more news regarding the game.

If you find yourself wondering what on earth the Yakuza game series is, it’s a mature oriented action franchise which had enormous market success in Japan but didn’t get quite the same reaction anywhere else. As the namesake suggests, the criminal scene in modern Japan is depicted in the first two iterations.

Yakuza 3, however, will be pretty different from its predecessors in the sense that it’s not set in contemporary Tokyo or Osaka. This one takes place 400 years ago in Kyoto where women sold flesh for money and men used money for well…. flesh. You play as Kiryu, a hired swordsman who does wet work given the right price. You specialize in four different fighting styles: Bare-fisted, single-bladed, dual-bladed, and broad sword. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, so choose wisely how you want to fight.

The main plot revolves around Kiryu getting hired by a lady named Haruka to assassinate a certain Musashi Miyamoto whom she apparently has a deep grudge with. Little does she know that Miyamoto is Kiryu’s alter ego when he’s outside town, making for some serious plot twists as the game progresses.

Aside from the main storyline, there’s literally over a hundred mini quests that you can take on to enrich the experience and reward you gameplay-wise. This is particularly important when trying to learn new moves as some of the best ones can be learned by Kiryu just by seeing them performed by martial artists or animals.

At present, there hasn’t been any official announcement of Yakuza 3 hitting the U.S., but if history is to be followed, there’s a fat chance that it will, as its predecessors did. We’ll keep you posted for more on Sega’s Yakuza 3.
