Enterbrain, a game magazine publishing firm in Japan, has noted that the Sony PlayStation 3 is now closing in on the Nintendo Wii, with the motion-sensing console outselling the bigger, more powerful machine by only 2 to 1 this October. That’s a significant gap-crossing, if you compare the 6-to-1 lead that the Nintendo Wii enjoyed over the Sony PlayStation 3 in June. This also marks the fourth consecutive month that the Wii’s lead over its competitors has decreased.
What are the figures exactly, then? From the four weeks before October 28, the Nintendo Wii sold 110,415 units, while the Sony PlayStation 3 sold about 47,183 units. Compared to the previous discrepancies between the hardware sales of both competitors, this is indeed a benchmark for Sony to be proud of.
This also means that today’s crucial holiday season, where parents and loved ones lurk in shopping malls for that ‘one’ gift, will not be as predictable as it could have appeared to be. Will the PlayStation 3 catch up to the Wii? There’s no way of telling in the Japanese market, but with recent price cuts, a new advertisement campaign, as well as a strong line of titles, there’s a bright future for the Sony PlayStation 3 indeed. Updates as we get them.
